WICHITA, Kan. — The Hesston College softball team split a road doubleheader with Newman University on Saturday afternoon, earning a 7–5 win in the opener before falling 4–0 in the second game.
Game 1 – Hesston 7, Newman 5
The Larks came out swinging in the first inning. Chloe Merjil singled to open the game and Alexis Newlin followed with a walk. Mia Manzo drove in the first run with an RBI single, and Ciara Mendez added another run-scoring hit to give Hesston a 2–0 lead. Newman answered with two runs in the bottom half to even the score.
Hesston regained momentum in the fourth inning. Skye Gomez started the rally with a single before Merjil doubled to right field to bring home a run. Newlin then launched a two-run home run to push the Larks ahead 5–2.
Mendez added another run in the fifth with a solo home run to extend the lead to 6–3. Newman fought back in the sixth, scoring twice to close the gap to 6–5.
The Larks added an important insurance run in the seventh. Newlin doubled and later scored on an RBI single by Serena Hewes to make it 7–5.
Bailey Symons went the distance in the circle to earn the win, allowing five runs while working around 13 Newman hits. Merjil, Newlin and Mendez each recorded two hits, while Newlin drove in two runs and scored three times in the victory.
Game 2 – Newman 4, Hesston 0
The second game remained close early as both teams battled through several scoreless innings. Newman struck first in the opening frame when Aspen Peterson singled and later scored on an RBI groundout.
The Jets extended their lead in the fourth inning. After a walk and an error put runners on base, Kayla Moreno delivered an RBI single and another run scored on a wild pitch to make it 3–0.
Newman added one more run in the sixth when AJ Borja doubled and later scored on another RBI single from Moreno.
Hesston finished with five hits in the game, including two from Serena Hewes and two from Skye Gomez. However, the Larks were unable to capitalize on their opportunities against Newman pitcher Kinyon DeCorte, who threw a complete-game shutout.
The Larks will return home Thursday, March 19, when they host McPherson College.
