HESSTON, Kan. — The Hesston College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Oklahoma Wesleyan on Thursday afternoon at Bess Mullet Field.
Game 1 — Oklahoma Wesleyan 12, Hesston 2
Oklahoma Wesleyan took control early, scoring two runs in the first inning on a double and groundout before breaking the game open in the second. The Eagles plated seven runs in the inning, capitalizing on multiple Hesston errors along with a string of hits to build a 9–0 lead.
The Larks threatened in the second inning as Serena Hewes and Abigail Cox both singled to put runners on, but Hesston was unable to bring a run across. Oklahoma Wesleyan added three more runs in the third inning, using a combination of singles, stolen bases and sacrifice flies to extend the lead to 12–0.
Hesston got on the board in the third inning when Alexis Newlin doubled and later scored on an RBI single from Mia Manzo. The Larks added another run in the fifth inning as Chloe Merjil reached base and came around to score on an RBI single from Skye Gomez.
Manzo led the Larks with two hits and an RBI, while Gomez also drove in a run. Hesston collected eight hits in the game but was unable to overcome the early deficit.
Game 2 — Oklahoma Wesleyan 13, Hesston 0
Oklahoma Wesleyan again jumped out quickly in game two, scoring four runs in the first inning on a series of hits and a sacrifice fly to take an early lead.
The Eagles broke the game open in the second inning, scoring eight runs on six hits, including multiple doubles and RBI singles to extend the lead to 12–0. Oklahoma Wesleyan added one more run in the third inning on a pair of sacrifice flies to make it 13–0.
Hesston had limited offensive opportunities but found a few chances late. Skye Gomez recorded a single in the fourth inning, and Maddie Kulmala followed with a hit to put runners on base, but the Larks were unable to capitalize.
Gomez and Kulmala accounted for Hesston's two hits in the game, while the Larks drew three walks but could not break through offensively.
The Larks will travel to Dallas Christian for a four-game series, with a doubleheader beginning Friday.
