HESSTON, Kan. – The Hesston College women's basketball team secured a thrilling 59-51 victory over Labette Community College on Saturday (Jan. 18). The game showcased a strong third-quarter performance by the Larks where they scored 20 points to break away from a closely contested first half. With the win, the Larks move to 3-13 overall and 1-2 in KJCCC play.
Key players for Hesston included Akiva Brown, who led the scoring with 12 points and contributed 8 rebounds. Ashleigh Williams displayed dominance on the boards with 11 rebounds and added 9 points. Mariah Hall chipped in with 10 rebounds and 6 points, while Brittany Cato contributed 9 points and 8 rebounds, including a crucial block. Williams and Hall were just two of four Larks to record a double digit rebound performance alongside Auniyeah Matlock and Anna Mcintire with 10 boards each.
Hesston's defense was pivotal, recording 8 steals and forcing 16 turnovers, while their dominance on the glass was evident with a 69-50 rebounding advantage. The team's effort in second-chance points, tallying 22, also played a decisive role in the win.
The Larks will be back on the road on Wednesday (Jan. 22) to take on Fort Scott Community College at 5:30 p.m.
