Men's Basketball Falls in Overtime Thriller

HESSTON, Kan. — Hesston College men's basketball put together one of its strongest offensive first halves of the season, but Mid-America Christian's late surge proved decisive as the Larks fell 87–81 in overtime on Tuesday evening in Yost Center. The Larks hit 18 three-pointers and had five players score in double figures, but were held to just three points in the extra period as MACU remained unbeaten.

Hesston came out firing, knocking down 12 threes in the first half to build an early lead. Antonio Odum got the Larks started with a three on the opening possession, and Devin Lewis followed with a blistering stretch, scoring 14 of his 17 points before halftime. Brennon Dodge added seven early points, and Rob Gambill hit from deep to help the Larks keep pace despite MACU's strong inside presence. The Evangels led by as many as 12, but Hesston responded with a 19–9 run capped by Trent Thompson's pair of free throws to pull within one. MACU held a slim 43–45 advantage at the break.

The second half remained tight as the Larks continued their perimeter attack. Thompson scored 11 of his 16 points after halftime, finishing with seven rebounds, five assists and three steals before fouling out late. Gambill added eight second-half points on his way to 14 for the night, and Odum contributed eight points, six assists, seven rebounds and two steals while facilitating Hesston's ball movement. Dodge provided steady scoring with 13 points, and Marcus Golden added six off the bench.

Mid-America Christian, however, controlled the glass and the foul line throughout the second half, converting 32 of 40 free throws for the game. Morris Williams led the visitors with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Zander Baker scored 14 and Clance Crosby added 13. The Evangels out-rebounded Hesston 45–32 and held the Larks to just one field goal in overtime.

In the extra period, MACU quickly took control, scoring the first five points and limiting Hesston to a single three-pointer. Despite the Larks' 47 percent shooting from beyond the arc (18-for-38), the Evangels' interior scoring and free-throw advantage ultimately made the difference.

The Larks will take a break before hosting McPherson College on Tuesday (Nov. 25) at 7 p.m.
