HESSTON, Kan. – The Hesston College baseball team put on a dominant all-around performance in a 24-3 win over McPherson College JV on Wednesday (Mar. 12). A 16-run sixth inning and 17 free trips to first helped Hesston to their first home win of the season. The Larks never trailed in the contest on the way to their largest margin of victory since 2021, 26-4 over Bethany College JV.
The Larks got on the board in the opening frame with a two-run bomb by Lucas Dunn. Kaleb Wise tripled to right field before four consecutive free trips to first plated two more runs. The Bulldogs scored all three of their runs in the top of the second on a bases clearing double. It was all Hesston from there as they a run in the bottom of the inning on a sacrifice fly. The Larks extended their lead even further in the following frame as a bunt single by Jett Millsap turned into a pair of runs scored thanks to a throwing error by the pitcher. Dunn collected his third RBI of the contest on a sacrifice fly the following at bat. The Larks struggled to get on base in the fourth and the fifth innings, but the levee broke open in the sixth as the Larks sent 21 batters to the plate in the frame. Dunn doubled to left to kick off the inning before Luke Richard reached on a hit by pitch and Noel Cesena loaded the bases on a bunt single. From there, four runs in a row were scored on three HBP's and one walk. RJ Cruz and Dunn recorded RBI singles to put the Larks up 14-3 before Richard cleared the bases with a grand slam to left field. The final six runs crossed on two walks, two hit by pitches, a fielders choice and an error.
Dunn finished the day 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, a home run and four RBI. Richard added five RBI.
The Larks pitching staff recorded 16 punchouts in the contest. Zach Guntle, Millsap, Wise and Richard each recorded three strikeouts in their respective innings of work.
The Larks will be back at home this weekend for a pair of doubleheaders with Marshalltown Community College on Saturday and Sunday (Mar. 15-16). First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. each day.
