HESSTON, Kan. – The Hesston College women's flag football team lost a pair of contests to Pratt Community College and Cottey College on Saturday (April 12). The Larks battled in each contest and made several impressive defensive stops, but were unable to find the endzone as they fell 7-0 and 20-0 respectively. The Larks will be back in action on Wednesday (Apr. 16) as they take on Bethel College at 6 p.m.
Game 1 – Hesston College 0, Pratt CC 7
The Larks and Beavers battled back and forth in this contest as we went to halftime in a scoreless tie. Both squads had solid opportunities to score, but were unable to cross the goal line. Lauren Payne stifled one of Pratt's opportunities with an interception on the goal line. Pratt broke the scoreless draw with a touchdown midway through the third quarter and took that lead to the end.
Alexis Pabon finished the game 22/39 passing for 225 yards and an interception. Brandi Olivarez hauled in nine catches for 56 yards and Akiva Brown made three catches for 71 yards.
Olivarez led the Larks with eight flag pulls including 2.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks and also two pass breakups.
Game 2 – Hesston College 0, Cottey College 20
The Comets were strong on offense marching down the field twice in the first half taking a 14-0 lead into the break. Cottey scored once more in the second half to secure the win.
Pabon finished 12/26 passing for 121 yards and three interceptions. Payne led the Larks in receiving with three catchers for 39 yards.
Payne also led the Lark defense with five pulls including two for loss and two sacks. Mikayla Lucas recorded eight pulls and Destiny Ortiz pulled six flags.
