Women's Soccer Drops Close Match with OPSU

GOODWELL, Okla. – Hesston College women's soccer battled hard on the road but came up short in a 2–1 loss to Oklahoma Panhandle State. The Aggies outshot the Larks 15–3 on the day, but Hesston stayed in contention until the final whistle thanks to disciplined defense and clutch goalkeeping from Ashleigh Williams, who tallied six saves.

The first half was dominated by Oklahoma Panhandle State's attack, as Williams was called on multiple times to deny shots from Emily Chavez and Emma Daskalov. The Larks' lone first-half chance came in the 12th minute when Susana Martinez forced a save. Despite Hesston's defensive stand, the Aggies finally broke through in the 44th minute when Yaddelis Alderete finished a pass from Joyleen Aleman to give the home team a 1–0 lead going into halftime.

Hesston responded with energy after the break and found the equalizer in the 56th minute. Rena Itoga pushed forward and delivered a clinical strike to tie the match 1–1. Brooke Tafoya later added another shot on goal, and the Larks pressed with a flurry of corner kicks in the 59th and 65th minutes. However, OPSU capitalized on a Hesston foul inside the box in the 77th minute. Chavez converted the penalty kick, restoring the Aggies' lead at 2–1.

The Larks could not muster another comeback despite strong minutes from midfielders like Brooklyn Paskett and Martinez, and a resilient defensive line anchored by Brooklyn Bailey. Hesston finished with three shots on target, while OPSU recorded eight on goal.

The Larks will be back in action on Saturday (Sept. 20) as they host Southwestern Christian University at 1 p.m.
