HESSTON, Kan. — The Hesston College men's basketball team battled through a back-and-forth contest Tuesday night but fell 76–67 to Haskell at Yost Center.
The first half featured frequent lead changes as both teams traded baskets early. Trent Thompson and Antonio Odum scored inside to give Hesston an early lift, while Rob Gambill provided a spark off the bench with two three-pointers. Brennon Dodge attacked the rim, and Dante Smith contributed on both ends as the Larks stayed balanced offensively. Hesston closed the half strong, with Thompson finishing in the paint in the final minute to send the Larks into halftime with a 32–31 lead.
The second half opened much the same, with the teams exchanging scores. Dante Smith knocked down a three, and Gambill continued his strong night from beyond the arc to keep Hesston in front early. Midway through the half, Haskell used a scoring run fueled by efficient shooting and trips to the free-throw line to build separation.
Hesston answered with baskets from Thompson and Smith to cut the deficit, but Haskell responded on the other end and closed the game at the line. The visitors stretched their lead to double digits late before securing the 76–67 final.
Thompson led the Larks with 16 points, six rebounds and four assists. Smith added 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks, while Dodge scored 12 points. Odum finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists, and Gambill chipped in 14 points off the bench, including four three-pointers.
The Larks will be back in action over the weekend as they head to Lawrence for the CAC Classic hosted by Haskell.
