Larks Split Doubleheader at Oklahoma Panhandle State

WOODWARD, Okla. — The Hesston College baseball team split a doubleheader with Oklahoma Panhandle State on Tuesday, winning the opener 10–5 before falling 6–5 in the second game.

Game 1 — Hesston 10, Oklahoma Panhandle State 5

Hesston wasted no time getting on the board in the first inning. Federico Moran walked and Samuel Vasquez reached on an error before Kaleb Wise launched a three-run home run to give the Larks an early 3–0 lead. Hesston added two more runs in the second inning when Vasquez drove in a run with a single and later scored on a wild pitch to extend the lead to 5–0.

Oklahoma Panhandle State scored in the second inning on a solo home run, but the Larks responded with a big fourth inning. Moran delivered an RBI single, Wise added a sacrifice fly and Noel Cesena followed with a two-RBI single to push the Hesston lead to 9–1.

The Aggies scored four runs in the fifth inning to cut into the deficit, taking advantage of walks, hit batters and an error to make it 9–5. Hesston added an insurance run in the sixth inning when Manuel Aranguren scored on a sacrifice fly from Chris Cammllarie to make the final score 10–5.

Wise led the Larks with four RBIs including the early home run, while Moran, Vasquez, Cesena and Kreyton Johnson all recorded hits. Hesston drew 11 walks in the game and stole multiple bases to keep pressure on the Aggies throughout the game.

Game 2 — Oklahoma Panhandle State 6, Hesston 5

The Larks struck first again in game two when Samuel Vasquez hit a solo home run in the first inning to give Hesston a 1–0 lead. Oklahoma Panhandle State answered with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2–1 lead.

Hesston responded with a strong second inning. Julian Cruz doubled to start the rally and later scored on an RBI single from Cole Steinrich. Federico Moran added a sacrifice fly and Vasquez drove in another run with a single as the Larks scored three runs in the inning to take a 4–2 lead.

Oklahoma Panhandle State tied the game in the third inning with two runs, and the game remained tied until the sixth inning when Hesston took a 5–4 lead after Toby Herndon scored on a balk following a walk and sacrifice bunt.

The Aggies answered in the bottom of the seventh inning. A single and double put runners in scoring position before a wild pitch tied the game and a two-out RBI single gave Oklahoma Panhandle State the walk-off 6–5 win in the final inning.

Vasquez led Hesston at the plate in game two with three hits including a home run and two RBIs, while Cruz added a double and Steinrich drove in a run.

The Larks will travel to Salina for a doubleheader against Kansas Wesleyan beginning at 5 p.m.
