Larks Draw with Oklahoma Panhandle State in Home Opener

HESSTON, Kan. — The Hesston College women's soccer team opened the 2026 season with a 2-2 draw against Oklahoma Panhandle State University on Saturday, Aug. 22.

Oklahoma Panhandle State nearly opened the scoring in the 13th minute when Emma Contreras hit the crossbar, but Hesston responded less than a minute later. Yesenia Sanchez set up Brooke Tafoya, who found the back of the net in the 14th minute to give the Larks an early 1-0 lead.

The Aggies continued to create opportunities throughout the first half, but goalkeeper Ashleigh Williams kept them off the board. Williams made three first-half saves, including stops in the 42nd and 45th minutes, as Hesston carried its 1-0 advantage into halftime.

Oklahoma Panhandle State applied more pressure early in the second half, including another shot off the crossbar in the 56th minute. The Larks weathered the attack and doubled their lead in the 59th minute when Sanchez scored off an assist from Susana Martinez to make it 2-0.

Hesston maintained the two-goal advantage deep into the second half despite continued pressure from the Aggies. Williams made saves in the 66th and 81st minutes, while the Larks nearly added a third goal when Nevaeh Bowman put a shot on target in the 86th minute.

Oklahoma Panhandle State finally broke through in the 88th minute. Contreras hit the crossbar before Stephanie Villagomez finished the opportunity to cut Hesston's lead to 2-1.

The Aggies completed the late comeback with just 35 seconds remaining. Emily Chavez converted a penalty kick to tie the match at 2-2. Oklahoma Panhandle State earned two more corner kicks in the closing seconds, but Hesston held on for the draw.

Oklahoma Panhandle State finished with a 28-11 advantage in shots, while Hesston put seven of its 11 attempts on goal. Williams recorded six saves for the Larks. Sanchez finished with a goal and an assist, while Tafoya added Hesston's other goal and Martinez recorded an assist.

The Larks will travel to McPherson, Kan., on Wednesday, Aug. 26 to face McPherson College at 7:30 p.m.
