Women's Basketball Falls in Close Battle with Friends JV

Hesston, KS -


The Larks dropped a close one last night inside Yost Center as they to Friends JV by a score of 45-41.  This loss brings the Larks record to 1-2 on the season.  

Hesston started the game out by scoring first as Kirah Stepps (Fr. Wichita, Kan.) made a jumper to give the Larks an early 2-0 lead.  The rest of the first quarter would be a low scoring affair, but Aydan Everett (Fr. Clovis, NM) was able to give the Larks the lead after a steal and the score.  The Larks would go into the second quarter leading 10-7.  Friends began the second quarter with an early basket, but the Larks were able to extend their to 12-9 on a layup by Sierra Campos (Fr. Wichita, Kan.) on a nice assist by Sydney Bontrager (So. Milford, Neb.). The score would remain the same until 5:29 left the half, until Star Her Many Horses (Fr. Lawrence, Kan.) drained a three pointer to increase their lead to 15-9.  Friends would go on to take the lead 22-17, and take their lead into the third quarter.  

The third quarter began with an offensive board and putback score by Sydney Bontrager to cut the Falcons lead to 22-19.  Hesston would go on a run and take the lead back after a step back three from Kirah Stepps as they would take the lead 24-22.  The score would remain the same until Sierra Campos drained a jumper to put the Larks up 26-22 with 4:36 left in the quarter.  The Larks headed into the fourth quarter leading by 4 points by a score of 33-29.  Hesston extend their lead in the fourth to 35-31 after Destiny Kessay (So. McNary, Ari.) knocked down two free throws.  The Falcons then went on an 8-0 run to take the lead back from Hesston as they led 38-35.  The Larks were able to get within three points of the Falcons lead, but were unable to complete their comeback as they fell 45-41.  

Kirah Stepps would lead all scorers with 11 points and she grabbed 6 rebounds as well.  Sydney Bontrager continued to dominate on the glass as she recorded her third consecutive 10+ rebound performance as she grabbed 18 rebounds.  Bontrager is currently 34 rebounds away from moving into the top ten in the rebounding category in the Hesston record books.

The Larks will now prepare for their next game as they face off with Friends University JV again on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 PM at Friends University.  Hesston will look to take the final game against Friends this season.
