LINDSBORG, Kan. – The Hesston College volleyball team started their season off strong by sweeping the Bethany College JV in straight sets (25-23, 25-21, 27-25) on Thursday, August 22. It was the first time since 2019 that the Larks started the season 1-0 adn the first time since 2018 that they started the season with a win in straight sets. The Larks knocked down 37 kills in the match, led by Joanna Gomez with 10 followed by Brittany Cato, Tanaeasia Brackens and Anna Franco with seven each.
The match started with a tightly contested first set, where both teams traded points and momentum. HC managed to pull ahead late in the set, thanks to crucial plays from Franco and Audrey Garrison who combined effectively to clinch the set 25-23.
In the second set, the Larks continued to show their strength, with a powerful serving game that included five aces. The match was tied as late as 18-18 before the Larks rallied five straight points to take their largest lead of the set. Despite Bethany's best efforts, Hesston held onto their lead as a block from Franco closed out the set, 25-21.
The third set was a nail-biter, with multiple ties and lead changes. The Swedes came out strong, taking a 5-1 lead to start the set, but the Larks found their rhythm rallying to a 10-8 lead. The two squads traded rallies down the stretch tying it up at 25-25, but a kill from Franco and a block by Brackens helped the Larks edge out the Swedes in a thrilling 27-25 finish, sealing their victory in straight sets.
Hesston College's victory was highlighted by a balanced attack and strong defensive play, including a total of 74 digs and 10 service aces. Meanwhile, Bethany College put up a strong fight but was ultimately undone by their 19 attack errors and 10 service errors.
The Lark volleyball team will be back in action on Monday, August 26 as the JV team hosts the Friends University JV at 6:30 p.m. in Yost Center.
