HESSTON, Kan. - Hesston College men's soccer turned in a commanding second-half performance to defeat Waldorf 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon for their second win of the season. Despite trailing early, the Larks rallied behind strong offensive pressure and timely goals to secure their second win of the season.
Waldorf struck quickly in the fifth minute when Ryder Tormaschy buried a shot to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead. Hesston responded with relentless attacking play, outshooting Waldorf 16-5 in the first half. Their persistence paid off in the 29th minute when Kenji Taira received a throw in from Ignacio Salazar and sent a long arcing shot over the outstretched hands of Waldorf keeper Dickson Phoon to level the match at 1-1. Goalkeeper Harry Morris came up with an important save on a Waldorf attempt, and the score remained tied at halftime.
The Larks took control after the break. In the 60th minute, Yura Yamazaki found Santi Llanos, who slotted home the go-ahead goal for a 2-1 advantage. Just five minutes later, Hesston benefited from an own goal to stretch the lead to 3-1. Llanos struck again in the 77th minute, this time assisted by Alexander Radu, to put the match firmly out of reach at 4-1.
Llanos led Hesston with two goals on six shots (five on target), while Taira added one goal of his own. Yamazaki and Radu each recorded an assist, and Salazar also contributed one. Radu was a constant threat, generating six shots with two on target. As a team, Hesston dominated offensively, posting 29 total shots with 13 on goal, compared to Waldorf's 8 shots and 3 on frame.
In goal, Morris played the full 90 minutes, making two saves while conceding just once. For Waldorf, keeper Samuel Borjon was under pressure throughout the second half, recording five saves, while Phoon had four in the opening 45 minutes.
The Larks will hit the pitch once again on Saturday (Sept. 20) as they face Southwestern Christian University at 3 p.m. in Bethany, Okla.
